“You are so lucky.” I have actually heard this a few times in my life. Not often but a few times. Heard it from someone once when they saw that I only had two kids. I heard it once when someone found out that I owned my home. I heard it once when someone found out how long my husband and I have been married. What makes a person lucky? Most people don’t get where they are at in life through luck. I find that at times we want or feel we deserve what someone has but we don’t know the story about how that person got whatever it is they have. Just because someone has a nice car doesn’t mean they are lucky. Some people have to work for years just to get the car they have. Because you don’t know their story you can exactly say they are lucky. Honestly there is nothing wrong with the saying but people should remember that the grass isn’t always greener. Luck to me is like finding money on the street or being the 99th customer on the right day. I don’t think luck is someone working hard for something and getting it. Having a good marriage is not luck. Getting a promotion is not luck. You don’t know what a person goes through to get the things they have. Sometimes you wouldn’t want what a person has if you knew what they went through to get it. That couple whose relationship you think is so great maybe they had to come to the brink of divorce more times than you can count before they figured it out. That person who has a brand new car maybe it took them working two jobs and ride the bus for about three years to get it.
Sometimes we want to get what someone gets and we don’t think about their journey to get where they are. From what we see they have it all but if you were to walk in their shoes you would probably see that it isn’t. What people show on the outside does not always actually show what they are really going through. That’s if they can hide it. I have found myself doing it. Seeing what other people have and wishing I had it. I don’t think wanting what other people have will never end but now I just think if I had to go through whatever they went through to get it would I still want it. I don’t think I could survive some of the walks I’ve heard about. I wouldn’t never want to take away from someone’s journey by saying they are lucky. Cause what they had to do to get where they are was not lucky.
How do you feel about people saying you are lucky for some of the things you have?
