Yesterday I had a problem that I hadn’t had to deal with in years. The little plastic tab had broken off the part of my phone cord that goes into the wall. We still have a home phone in case of emergencies. But that little piece breaking off means that of course it doesn’t work as well. Anyone born in the 90’s or earlier knows all about this. It brought back so many memories and made me chuckle. It also got me thinking about things that kids today don’t have to worry about that we did back in the day. So I thought it would be fun to create a list.
- Kids today don’t have to worry about holding the phone cord in place to talk to their friends or family. Yep when that little piece comes off it means your phone cord won’t stay in.
- Kids today since they basically use cell phones don’t have to worry about people picking up the phone in their conversation and either talking or start dialing a number.
- Kids today don’t have to worry about not having enough money for they pay phone.
- Technology has evolved so much that even if the phone is broken, they have the option to get data recovery services to save their files.
- They also don’t have to worry about having to add money when they talk so long and that voice comes in saying add $0.25 cents.
- Putting all the tape back into the cassette tape and having to pray that it still plays or doesn’t twist.
- Carrying all the tapes or cd’s you want to listen to in a special carrying case.
- Back in the day when you wanted to copy a tape that your friend had but you didn’t you had to use two radios and then on top of that you had to pray no one came in talking or their voice would be on your recording. Usually this is when one of your parents decided they needed you for something. (This was before they came out with the double cassette player on the stereo)
- When they did come out with the double cassette player you had to be a master in pressing the two buttons at the exact same time.
- Kids today don’t have to worry about rewinding your cassette tape over and over again to write down song lyrics. Even when you wrote them down you still weren’t sure if they said what you thought they said. I still remember my friends arguing over whose interpretation was right. Years later I finding out most of my guesses were wrong.
- Blowing in their game cartridges to get them to work.
- Actually blowing in just about anything to get it to work. I remember blowing in my VCR and cassette player too.
- Having to rewind or fast forward to find your favorite song for an artists album. It took a few minutes if you didn’t time it just right.
- Getting up to turn the television.
- Turning the dial on a television. I remember just missing the channel I was looking for because I was turning too fast.
- People trying to sneak on the phone to hear your phone conversation. They either held down the dial tone button or unplugged the phone and then plugged it in.
- People recording over your favorite song, television show, or movie. I had this done to me so many times.
- Recording a television show or movie and not being able to change the channel cause it would record that too.
- Waiting for a tape or cassette tape to rewind.
- Flipping a tape over to here the rest of an album.
- Your parents getting on the phone and telling you it’s time to hang up.
With the advancement of technology kids just don’t have to worry about these things. I am glad I have these memories. You never think about the difference of how you grew up and how your kids growing up very often. Just for kicks I am posting a pic of me back in the day.

Im a 90s kid I went through all of this. These kids will never know but I am nervous for the future what we are going through 20 yrs from now I wonder what future kids will never have to go through. I still think its weird it 2018 and we are still plugging up our phones to charge, maybe we will finally have fully wireless charging.
Kgilbert says
I am seeing wireless chargers now. I want one so bad. But my phone isn’t compatible. Advancements in technology is kind of scary though. I feel like soon we will be completely dependent on it and I don’t want to be.

LOL, I was thinking about this just last week. My kids have it so good. Although I loved making prank calls from the phone book when I was little, and my kids will never know the joy of those giggles after you hang up.
Kgilbert says
No they won’t at all. I used to hate getting them but love making them. With caller ID that wouldn’t even be possible now.

LOL. That phone cord was me all the time. My mom would yell at me for stretching it out. I just told my son how lucky he is to have fancy game consoles and such too.
Kgilbert says
Lol! That phone cord was something else. I don’t think kids today would know what to do with a phone cord that long.

I can relate to all of these. Kids don’t know about calling the weather number to hear the automated report. Nor do they know an operator was an actual person.
Kgilbert says
They have absolutely no clue. It is amazing to see how they react when we tell them about it.

This is hilarious! I remember having to buy a whole thing of blank cds just because you wanted someone to burn a cd for you or people keeping blanks in their backpacks to sell lol!! I crack up watching This Is Us sometimes seeing the back in the day when we didn’t have cell phones! lol
Kgilbert says
Wasn’t it! It is interesting to see how far technology has come. This Is Us is my show.

Man did this post make me feel so nostalgic. Lol was having a conversation with a friend and she said “in 2 years, 1990 will have been 30 years ago” and that made me feel just as nostalgic as this post did lol
Kgilbert says
Oh goodness! Has it really been that long. I never thought about that.

All of this is so true. My 3 year old saw a cordless house phone the other day and was confused as to how it worked.
