Ugh! I would love to know when people decided it was okay to say whatever they want to people. I’ve decided to create a category so I can serve people the side eye when they need it. Why? Because I had an incident happen today where this person definitely deserved some. <–!more–>
I’m not perfect but I feel like I use my god given filter pretty well. Yes I do have foot in mouth syndrome sometimes but it is far and in between. I like to think I’m pretty good at it. However other people I feel must like to taste their feet because I think they say whatever comes to their mind without thought to who they might offend.
Today Tyler, Nishe’, and I walked to the store. They were bored and I needed to pick up a few things. One of the things that I had to pick up was a money order. When I walked in and saw the length of the line I thought that it would be in my best interest to go ahead and get in line. There is this one employee that I’ve been avoiding due to something she did at another visit to the store. As soon as I saw her I tried to tell my kids to go ahead and get the items they wanted. They didn’t hear me because they were listening to music on their phones so they had headphones in. So before they could realize what I was saying she was standing in front of them. Now some might interpret what I got upset about as petty but for me there are just some things that you don’t ask kids. She noticed that my kids had phones and she goes “ya’ll for phones already.” My kids didn’t hear her. They still had headphones in. So she repeated herself until they heard her. I’m still trying to tell them to go get their stuff. Once they heard me. They tried to leave but she was still questioning why they had the phones. Then she ended the conversation with “I hope ya’ll did good in school to get them.” I was not happy.
Now let me explain why this exchange bothered me.
- She is not a family member or a person who is a constant in my kids life beyond the many times we have seen her at the store.
- I felt as if she was questioning mine and my husband’s parenting.
- I just don’t think she should have asked my kids anything.
Yeah maybe I am overreacting a little but I just don’t think that exchange should have happened. I wound up speaking with her supervisor. I just wish people would think before they speak.
Have you ever had an encounter such as this? How did you handle it?
