It has been a few months since my family and I have gone a hike. It has been even longer when that hike included a waterfall. This past Father’s Day weekend we took a trip up to South Carolina to visit Stumphouse Tunnel and Issaqueena Falls. It was The Husband’s idea. He always has great outing ideas. We love doing outside adventures as a family. Matter fact this outing was a complete surprise. The kids and I had no idea that he planned it.
We woke up at 6:30am to make the 2 hour and 17 minute drive up. Not knowing where we were going I was super excited to see where we ended up. I knew it would be fun either way. When we got there and I saw that we were hiking I was so glad I didn’t wear sandals like I had first planned to. The Stumphouse Tunnel was a tunnel built in an attempt to connect the port of Charleston to cities of the Midwest as part of the Blue Ridge Railroad Project. Unfortunately due to the Civil War and the collapse of the state’s economy the tunnel was never completed. Now it is a family friendly tunnel where people can walk through for a quarter of a mile. Plus the tunnel stays at about fifty degrees. It was so cool to go inside and see the tunnel. It only goes so far but it was great to see inside. You can capture some really nice pictures. It was really exciting to see.
On our way up to Stumphouse Tunnel we noticed a sign for Issaqueena Falls so after walking through the tunnel we headed back down the hill to explore the waterfall. It really doesn’t take long to get to the falls. It is a really short walk. We got to the overlook in about 20 minutes. But we wanted to get closer to the falls so we climbed down to get a closer look. You have to be careful going down because although there is a path it is very rocky at certain points and there are a bunch of granddaddy long leg spiders. You just have to watch where you put your hands. To get closer to the falls takes about 30 minutes. But trust me you will be rewarded with a beautiful view for your efforts. Please where tennis shoes if you plan to visit. I actually saw people in sandals and although they made it down I just wasn’t that brave.
Over all this trip was just wonderful. It was really fun and exciting. I am glad that we are doing things like this before the kids go back to school. I am also glad that they still enjoy hanging out with us on these adventures. It is great to still be able to create such wonderful memories with them.
