I have finally finished my second book for this year. I promised myself at the beginning of this year that I would get back into my love of reading. I must admit it has been difficult finding time for it. It’s not that I don’t have time for it. I just find my attention on other things. But I decided that I would make myself do it. Over the past three months I have been reading this book called The Marriage Pact. I mentioned this book in a post when I first got it. I actually started reading it last year. But I kept losing interest. I have picked it up and put it down so many times that I lost count. The writers style of writing kind of throws me off. There are so many chapters and many of them short ones. Not one of my favorite things in a book. Finally two months ago I decided I was determined to finish this book. So that’s what I did. The Marriage Pact by Michelle Richmond is a book about Jake and Alice. Alice is a lawyer and Jake is a partner in a psychology practice. They are invited to join The Pact through a client that Alice is representing at the law firm that she works for shortly after their wedding. They have no idea how their lives are going to change once they agree to join especially after Jake comes into contact with a former college classmate. They are obligated to follow rules such as whenever your spouse calls you must always answer and monthly gifts. If these rules are broken it could mean anything from a meeting from your representative or a trip to a place called Fernley and being harshly punished for what The Pact consider serious offenses. What is suppose to be a normal life turns into some thing far beyond their control. The number one rule is once you join The Pact there is no escaping it.
I must admit that when I first started reading this book I did not really give it a chance. But when I focused and started reading it I got more into it. I must admit The Pact is really what held my interest. This whole idea of joining a group that exists to keep marriage together is intriguing. I actually started wondering if I would join such a thing if given the opportunity. Just like Jake and Alice to me it sounded like a good idea. Isn’t it always suggested to keep yourself surrounded by like minded individuals. But as I read further into the story I realized I definitely with no doubt want to be apart of The Pact. I think their values are okay but the way they ensure that the members carry them out is horrible. There were times I felt sorry for both Jake and Alice. At first it was more Alice than Jake and then it became Jake and in the end it was both of them. I have to admire Jake for his strength cause he wanted nothing more but to protect his wife. That man went to the edges of the earth to make sure he did just that. He is one heck of a man. I thought Alice was amazing as well. In the beginning she was more punished by The Pact than Jake was and because she wanted a “happy marriage” she soldiered through. This book was definitely a crazy one. I don’t know if I would read it again but I would definitely recommend someone reading it at least once.
