I am months late on seeing Monsters University. I feel as if I may be the only parent with kids who hasn’t seen it. Ha ha ha!! I finally saw it yesterday. This Thanksgiving the family and I decided to stay home. While I missed the normal Thanksgiving food and family bonding I enjoyed the time with my husband and kids, snuggled up in the monster wear you’d look cute in. Ironically enough we’d had ourselves watching Monsters University soon after. We had a semi- Thanksgiving meal but I promised that I would get them the real Thanksgiving fixings probably this weekend. Now back to the movie. I have been looking forward to seeing this movie since it hit theaters. Mainly because I enjoyed Monsters Inc. so much. I am a Mike and Sully fan. I think it is awesome to see where they started.
Monsters University follows Mike and Sully has they begin their journey on the road to becoming Scarers. Mike has wanted to be a scarer since he toured Monsters Inc. during a elementary school field trip. He actually got a chance to see a scarer in action when he followed him into a child’s bedroom. The scarer’s job is to scare children enough to provide energy for the city of Monstropolis. Well ever since that experience Mike knew what he wanted to do. Sully’s journey is a little different. He goes to Monsters University to become a scarer because that is where his family has gone. He wants to live up to the family name and become a top Scarer at Monsters Inc. just like his dad. They both have one goal in mind and that is to succeed. However as any movie and life goes their journey won’t be smooth sailing there will be obstacles.
Mike’s problem is that he isn’t necessarily a scary looking monster. He is more of a cutie. Well in my eyes he is and because he doesn’t look scary he doesn’t scare kids. Everyone lets him know this but what I like about Mike is that he doesn’t let this stop him from trying to pursue his dreams. Through out the movie people share their opinion on tis very fact. Mike does all that he can to prove that he can be a scarer. He studies and learns everything he can about being a scarer. However his look doesn’t allow him to make the cut. He eventually his taken out of the Scarer Program.
Sully thought that because his last name was Sullivan that, that would be enough to get him through Monsters University. He quickly finds out that there is more to school than just being a Sullivan. He has to study and learn other scary monster faces than the one he knows. He finds out to succeed in Monsters University you actually have to work. His lack of studying and dedication to work eventually gets him thrown out of the Scare Program.
Sully and Mike eventually team up with another group of monsters to enter the scare games. Mike and Sully has a wager with the Dean that if they win the Scare games that them and their other teammates are back into the scare program. She doesn’t think that Mike or his teammates will succeed. The only one who she thinks will have a chance is Sully. He has the look, size, and talent to become a successful scarer. Even though no one thinks that they will they win the scare games. But they didn’t win it the way they wanted to since Sully decided to cheat in order to help them to win. You’ll have to watch the movie to see how he cheats and to also see if they make it through the university.
I really enjoyed this movie. It teaches kids to continue to try for their goals. Also to never give up and even if you don’t succeed you can find other ways to get to where you want to be. I think that Sully and Mike both learned a lot about themselves. I love how Disney fits in a positive message into their movies and makes it easy for children to understand and parents to explain. I love how Mike and Sully work together. Also how they settle their differences and become friends.
I highly recommend going out today and purchasing Monsters University if you haven’t already. Also purchase Monsters Inc. It is also a great movie.
