Lately I have been wanting to cook different things from what I normally cook. I guess I just want to experience something different. I have been doing this for a few weeks now. What I have noticed is I really like the taste of fresh vegetables in my meals. Especially since I am trying to watch my weight. I don’t know but something about having fresh vegetables makes a meal taste so much better. Trying to continue what I have been doing and save money I shopped at two stores this week Publix and Kroger. They both had some deals that I really wanted to take advantage of. For example Publix had a buy one get one sell on macaroni but they also had their black beans on sell for .69 cents. Kroger had a deal going on their ground turkey where you could get two for $7. At the end of my shopping trip I think I came away with some good items.
The next day I took out some of the things I purchased. I had:
-canned diced tomatoes
-bell peppers
-ground turkey
-black beans
-corn
-Swanson chicken broth
I looked at all these ingredients and wondered what I could make. Then it donned on me. I could make some homemade chili. I have never made chili before but I thought it should be easy enough and fun to try. I also had two little people who love to help me in the kitchen. I told Tyler and Nishe’ what I wanted to do and they were game. We all had our jobs. Nishe’ opened the cans and Tyler cut the bell peppers.
Now I had no idea how this would turn out but we had so much fun making it. A lot of the ingredients my kids had never had before so I was skeptical on whether they would like it or not. But they really enjoyed seeing everything come together and so did I . It looked so pretty.
This whole process took maybe 30 minutes at most. We all couldn’t wait to taste it because it smelled so good. Then it was time for the taste test.
I am proud to say that it was a hit. They loved it and even went back for seconds. Later on though they decided it would taste better with noodles in it. I love experimenting so I gave it a try. I must say while it tasted good I much preferred it without pasta. However I thought that it was only fair since they tried it my way that I try it theirs.
I have found that cooking really helps me bond with my kids. Usually when they ask to help me cook I say no because I just want to get things done and over with. But on the occasions like this when I slow down and take my time and allow them to help me I think it is really relaxing and fun. They seem at ease talking and really like to spend time with me. I think I am going to do this more often. It was a really great experience. They also told me that being a part of the cooking process also encourages them to try new things. I can understand where they are coming from. I totally see us doing this more often in the future.
