On Tuesday my family and I were sitting around watching Inside Edition like we do every day. It is like a ritual in our house. Promptly at 7 our television is on CBS. I always pay attention but this past Tuesday I found the topic particularly interesting. The segment was talking about Household items that expired. Let me tell you I was absolutely amazed. There were some items that I never thought about expiring. I knew that a bed had a shelf life of about 10 years. But I never knew that things like a pillow could expire. Of course they get old but yeah never knew how long they last. Of course you know toothbrushes you should exchange every 3 months. I figured that if I didn’t know that others may not know so I thought that I would share what I learned. I also researched some others.
1. Pillows are suppose to last for up to 5 years. A way that you can test whether or not it’s time to throw your pillow away is to fold your pillow in half. If it bounces back then it’s good and if not then it’s time to throw it out.
2. Mascara is only good for 3 months after it’s open.
3. Powder cosmetics and lipsticks should be exchanged at least every two years.
4. liquid makeup and facial cleansers last up to six months.
5. Vacuum cleaners last up to 5-7 years.
6. Towels are good for between 2-5 years.
7. Dishwasher should last between 9-11 years.
8. Washer machines should last between 10-11 years
9. Dryers should hold up between 12-13 years.
10. Smoke alarms should be replaced approximately every 10 years.
Of course me being the type of person who loves to learn I had to go see what else I can find. Here are a few things I found at the website The Fun Times Guide.
11. Air Fresheners last up to 2 years.
12. Batteries up to 10 years.
13. Bleach between 3 to 6 months.
14. Laundry detergent if opened 6 months and if it isn’t opened up to 9 -12 months.
15. Windex up to 2 years.
I had fun looking this stuff. Did you know about these items?

had NO idea about bleach. i do know that carbon monoxide alarms expire also.
Kgilbert says
ME neither. I was surprised.

I knew some of them simply because mine died and I had to replace it. I’ve noticed with pillows, though, that after a while you can’t “fluff” them any more and there’s a hole in the middle. At that point I usually turn them into pet beds.

Yes I thought that was pretty funny myself but then when you think about it. It makes sense. Think about all the slobbering some people do and then when you get sick.

I never would have thought that something like laundry detergent had a shelf life. Of course, with the amount of laundry that needs doing, who wouldn’t go through it?
My favorite pillows are the ones that are all flat like that!
Kgilbert says
Yes I was totally surprised myself
Ange says

Yes I have to get me some new ones as well. I hate getting rid of things but at the same time don’t want to use anything that isn’t good for my family or I.
Kgilbert says
Yes it was definitely fun to read and interesting.

Some of those I can see but towels? Like do they have germs in them or they’re saying the fibers are weak and hold moisture or something. I’m off to look for that list.

I think that the fibers just thin out over time. I have had some towels rip on me because they are so old after so many washes.
valmg @ Mom Knows It All says
I didn’t know there was thinking that pillows expire. I bet it doesn’t apply to the really cheap pillows that bend 100 ways when you buy them, LOL.
Kgilbert says
Me neither. Ya learn something new everyday.

I had no idea that most of these items had expiration dates so thanks for sharing. I learned of the makeup one, after putting on a mascara that I had open for 3 years and a friend blasted me. Telling me of the expiration and pointing out the bacteria that was probably growing on it.
I know I need to replace quite a few of my household items that are definitely expired.

I have makeup that’s several years old that I need to throw out.
But everything else I keep forever.
I can’t wait to move into our new home. I plan to upgrade a lot of things like pillows and towels.
