I am so excited I just finished reading my first book of 2022. The name of the book I just finished reading was Becoming by Michelle Obama. I am trying to expand my reading to include more nonfiction. I am not really a fan of nonfiction. But I am want to be. This is like my third time reading a nonfiction book that wasn’t poetry. Before now that was as nonfiction as I got. But I like Michelle Obama so I thought this would be a good book to pick up. I have always been curious about the first African American first lady. So I was thrilled to learn more about her. She has always been an awesome person to me. I wasn’t expecting this book to take as long as it took me to read. It took me a total of about four months. The first lady isn’t a boring person to me at all. It’s simply nonfiction is not my thing. But I was determined to finish this book.
I am glad I read this book. It was so nice to learn more about Michelle Obama. I always knew she was more than just the wife of Barack Obama. I knew she had her own story. I liked learning about her journey to becoming a lawyer. It was not easy for her at all. I think it was awesome that she got into her choice school Princeton. I loved that she learned piano from her great aunt. I enjoyed reading how her and Barack met. I didn’t know that Barack Obama was her junior associate. I didn’t know her dad had multiple sclerosis. I learned so much about her reading this book. So much that I didn’t realize how much I didn’t actually know. It was so cool to learn that she was friends with the Reverend Jesse Jackson’s daughters. I thought it was amazing how she overcame the obstacles that showed up in her life. It was great to read how she and Barack worked their way through issues especially when it came to his political career. I especially love how she worked to keep her own identity outside of who her husband is. She was and continues to be determined to be her own person. My favorite thing was finding out how she carved her own spot in her role as first lady. I think she gave as much to the United States as her husband did. I always liked how different she and Barack approached their time in the White House. I also really liked how they protected their daughters but also allowed them some freedom and room to grow while giving them as much of a normal upbringing as they could in the White House. The book really helped me to understand Michelle Obama more.
I have already chosen my next book and can’t wait to share it with you guys. I am hoping that it doesn’t take me as long as this one did. But it is a fiction book so it may not take me super long. I just have to make sure I make time for it. That is my goal to do more reading this year. So book one done and now on to the next one.
