I have been natural for 7 years now and I’m still learning about my hair. One thing I have not really found the confidence to do is wear my hair down or without my braids. I feel better with my hair braided or with twists. I have worn it down on occasion but I have always worried whether it looks right or if I look a total hot mess. I have always admired women who are able to wear their hair in any style and it looks fabulous on them. One such person is Bernetta of the blog Bernettastyle.com .
About a year ago I came across the blog Bernettastyle.com. I believe if I remember correctly the first post I read was about her doing another big chop. It was funny cause for over a year now I’ve been debating on whether or not to do a big chop myself. She did it and she looked fabulous!! Now she has this gorgeous head of hair that she wears in many styles and they all look great on her. I think one thing that makes her look great besides her natural beauty is her confidence. Which is one thing I’m working on with myself being more confident and worrying less about what others may think of my looks. I just admire her from what I have read about her over the past I believe year and a half. I have become an avid reader because I’m always wondering what she is wearing our what hairstyle she is rocking. You can tell her confidence goes into her parenting as well. Every time you see pics of her little ones especially her little lady who also has a beautiful healthy head of hair you can see how happy they are. She is so pretty. Her little lady is always looking great as well!
Ever since finding Bernetta’s blog it has inspired me to try new things with my hair. I am still in the trial-and-error phase of testing out various hair care products from several brands like Kintsugi, for instance, to figure out the right products for my hair. I am also trying to do my hair without braids or twists but I know I will eventually figure it out. I do my hair myself so it is totally a learning process for me. I tried a style last week and wanted to scream because I could not get it to look right maybe it looked right but I was afraid of what others thought of it. Either way, I wound up going back to my safe zone of twists.
The style was meant to be a partially braided updo style and I gave up. I found myself thinking of a list of stylists I’ve seen on Facebook and others I know that probably would’ve just done them and rocked it. But nope not me. So I just wanted to say thanks to Bernetta for inspiring me to try harder. I have come to admire your many styles.

Thank you so much for your post. When you wanted some images, I promise I didn’t know what you were going to write about. I was shocked and in awe. I appreciate your kind words. Let me say this about confidence – you just have to get to a point where peoples thoughts about certain subjects just really don’t matter. I too, had my last relaxer in 2007 and really haven’t looked back. I didn’t do a big chop back then. I let it grow out and cut the last of the perm off in 2008. I wore my first “FRO” to work and emotionally it was hard. I was nervous and afraid of the looks and more. I took a deep breath and walked through my office (which was a call center then). I saw the people poking their heads up as I walked by, whispers, stares and pointing. But I made it too my desk. And the next day, I did it again. There have been many BAD hair days! MANY!! It’s life. You just keep on creating though. Before I went natural, I also changed my hair frequently. I believe I get that from my mother and grandmother. That’s just in me. I am always thinking about my next style. Katherine, take out the twist and come out of your comfort zone. Who cares if PEOPLE think you look a mess! If you look in the mirror and LIKE IT – then ROCK IT! In time you will get better with your styles and who knows what you will come up with. One last thing – Youtube became my best friend when I started this journey! Thanks again for all the kind words!

Glad I could make you smile. You appear to be an awesome person to me. Although we have yet to meet in person you really have inspired me to put in more effort into me. I definitely plan on stepping outside of my comfort zone. Yep youtube is my friend too. Gotta go back to it. It has been a minute since I went to it for a natural hairstyle. Definitely could use some tips. Thanks for reading and allowing me to use your pictures.

Well that’s just too sweet! Bernetta does a great job with her hair! I’m sure she’s had her moments, as we all do. But I agree, she rocks. Keep trying, you’ll find your groove. I’m experimenting right along with you. 😉

Nice post and yes, I too know Bernetta and her confidence shows. She is very stylish and can rock any hair style but being confident and comfortable in your skin is key.
I would love to see a hair style you try. It’s all trial and error so lets us see and write a post sharing your experience and some pics. 🙂

I think I will definitely do that. I love getting opinions. Definitely Trial and error.

Cool post. I feel you on hair envy. I don’t spend much time doing my hair but occasionally I’ll come across a cute style and try it…with varying degrees of success. Keep trying 🙂
