When you become a mother it becomes very easy to put yourself on the backburner. Well at least for me it was. I had two excuses for not doing things for myself. Their names are Tyler and Nishe’. My other excuses have to do with the household. I never really even thought about how much I use them as a crutch until recently.
C’mon, I am pretty sure we have all done it. You see a cute outfit in the store and you consider getting it but then you say no this money can be better spent on something for the kids. So instead of getting that cute outfit you go and find something cute for yourself. If you do it once or twice it becomes a habit after awhile to make yourself last. Then you can do it without thinking. My husband has literally had to tell me, “Katherine I am giving this money to you to spend on you” and walked around a store with me to make sure I did it because I never bought myself anything. I think at the time I just felt guilty for doing it. I felt like I was taking something away from my kids or money that can be put towards a bill. Money has always been an issue growing up and while it’s not a big problem currently, I am always careful about it. I mean, when it comes to learning finances, maybe how to invest in stocks or how to lend money to peers, learning how to budget, my foremost thought/goal was to ultimately save the money for the future. I wasn’t working it so I didn’t feel I deserved it for spending on cute things. Even when I was told I did.
So I am going to force myself to stop feeling guilty. We should not feel bad for putting ourselves first as mothers, wives, or women period. It is okay to splurge on yourself every once a while. You can make yourself a priority and go back to school. I mean whatever you desire to do you can make happen. There is a difference between putting on hold and just never doing it. Trust me I know. It took me awhile to realize that. There are ways you can make yourself a priority even if it’s just baby steps.
- Create a vision board or write your goals down.
- Save towards your goals. If you want a car start saving towards it start a savings account or make a bank.
- Just buy it. If you see something you want, like a silver necklace, for instance, and you have the money and it won’t hurt your financial situation, then just purchase what you want. A good thing about spending money on precious metals like silver or gold is that you can sell silver (or any other precious metal for that matter) when you are in need of money. So maybe we should refer to these purchases as investments. Yet what could be more valuable than self-love?
- Remember you deserve to focus on yourself from time to time.
But first things first you have to start by not feeling bad for taking care of you. Decide that it is okay for you to do something for yourself. That you are not taking away from your family if you buy one thing for yourself. That in the end your family will benefit if you do.
What are you going to do to focus on yourself this year?
