I am a huge Terry Mcmillan fan. I have read a number of her books. I’ve read Mama and Disappearing Acts to name a few. I’ve also seen some of the movies that came from her books like Disappearing Acts, Waiting to Exhale , and How Stella Got Her Groove Back. I have enjoyed everyone. So when a few weeks ago I saw a preview for a movie for her book A Day Late and A Dollar Short I knew I had to see it. This book is by far one of my favorites written by her. I read the book 3 times total. In fact I just purchased the book again and am preparing to read it a 4th time after seeing the movie. The movie premiered this past Saturday on Life Time.
The movie and the book are about Viola Price (Whoopi Goldberg) and her family. Viola suffers an asthma attack and after waking up in the hospital is told by her doctor that her next asthma attack could kill her. So she decides to try to fix her family before she passes away. She has four children with her husband Cecil (Ving Rhames) and they all have their issues including Cecil. Her son Lewis (Mekhi Phifer) out of jail and trying to figure out his co-parenting situation with his son’s mother and her new husband, Paris (Anika Noni Rose) is a single mother of a teenage son, Her daughter Charlotte (Tichina Arnold) has a problem wither sister Janelle (Kimberly Elise) , and Janelle has to figure out what is going on with her daughter which will all but devastate her when what is going on comes to light. Then there is her husband Cecil who is dating a younger woman with 3 kids. Yes there is definitely a lot going on in this movie.
I must tell you I loved this movie as much as I loved the book. I think the thing that made me really want to watch the movie was the star studded cast. All the actors and actresses are very talented. They really did the book justice. I think whoever the director was picked the right person for each part. They really became the characters. I think the movie spoke volumes. The only complaint I really had was I wish that it was longer so that they could go into the characters deeper. I thought the movie was great though. It will make you angry, sad, and laugh at the same time. How they fit all that in two hours I have no idea but they did it. If you missed the Saturday premiere don’t worry it comes back on again Thursday at 8p.m. and then again at 12a.m. I am definitely going to watch it again.
