This post is sponsored my Coca-Cola. All opinions expressed are my own. My kids Tyler and Nishe’ have told me multiple times that one thing they want to do when they get older is own a business. They have a number of businesses that they want to open from restaurants to pet stores. From what they tell me they are going to be two very busy adults. I am very glad that they have plans for their future. One thing I always tell them though is if they want to do these things they need to have a plan. Their plan must also include goals. I explain to them that goals are important because it gives them something to reach for in their career paths. One thing that we did different for this school year is I had them write a letter to themselves saying what goals that they wanted to meet for this school year. I want them to remember why they are going to school every day.
Steve Harvey has been sharing some great tips on how to help you talk to your teens about opening up about their goals and how we as parents can help them achieve tem. These tips are called Coke Mini Moments. These tips can be very helpful when you are trying to find a way to open a dialogue with your teen. Here are the tips that he shared: 1. Pick a great time to talk with your teen. Steve Harvey calls this spotting your “in”. Determine when is the best time to talk with your team. It could be while preparing dinner or during dinner. 2. Make sure your teen is comfortable. Maybe have a discussion over a bowl of ice cream. Go for a walk. Just make sure things aren’t awkward. 3. Don’t judge. Remember your teen is not you. How you may do things may not work for them. So try to be a great listener and let them know that you won’t judge them. 4. Try to relate to them. Remind them that you were once a teen yourself. Share some stories that you think that they can relate to. 5. Definitely let them know that you are there for them. Remind them that as their parent you are there to help and to talk to. I think that it is important for children and just people in general to have goals. Goals help you to see where you are going. I know I feel more focused when I have a goal in mind for myself. I believe it helps me to work harder.
